Advanced Manufacturing

Cleaning as process control in batteries, optics, coatings and precision assembly.

Advanced manufacturing covers very different processes — battery cells, optics, coatings, precision assemblies, power electronics — that share one thing: value added per part is high and rework is expensive. At that point cleaning stops being maintenance and becomes process control.

Dry rooms and cell manufacturing

Lithium cell manufacturing does not only demand clean air: it demands dry air. Electrolyte and active materials react with moisture, so the work zone is held at a dew point far below normal plant ambient, and that changes the rules for consumables.

In very dry air materials charge easily, so a wiper that behaves well under normal conditions can start attracting and holding particles. And any material contributing residual moisture is an added problem in a room that costs a great deal to keep dry.

Optics and coatings

On optical and coated surfaces the defect is visible and the acceptance criterion is strict. The wiper has to lift without scratching and without leaving residue, and there microfibre and knitted polyester play different roles that are not interchangeable.

As in aerospace, silicones are effectively banned: they contaminate the coating chamber and the defect appears lots later, when it is hard to tie back to its cause. It is the kind of contamination that costs dearly precisely because it takes time to show.

Automotive and power electronics

Electronics destined for a vehicle is built under IATF 16949 and tested against life requirements that tolerate no latent failures. That has pushed line-level cleanliness and ESD controls toward standards previously seen only in semiconductor work, especially for power modules, sensors and driver-assistance systems.

The practical result is that many plants live with two regimes: general manufacturing areas and process cells with cleanroom requirements. Mixing consumables between the two is a common error, easily avoided with colour coding and separate storage.

Choose by operation, not by catalogue

Before comparing prices, settle three things: which solvent will be used, what release level the process tolerates, and in what format the material is dispensed, because format drives real consumption and handling.

A cheaper wiper that forces three per operation is not cheaper. And a format that lets someone grab a handful with a gloved hand burns far faster than any spreadsheet calculation suggests.

Format matters as much as material

The same material comes as loose wipers, a roll of pre-cut sheets or a pop-up dispenser box, and each format solves a different problem. Loose wipers are flexible; pre-cut rolls discipline consumption and suit large surfaces; pop-up boxes deliver one sheet at a time and perform best on high-turnover floors.

For heavy industrial cleaning — spills, oils, greases — the criterion shifts: absorbency and wet strength matter more than release level, because the consumable is not touching a critical surface.

Standardise without flattening

The plant that runs well uses neither one wiper for everything nor twenty different references. It usually has three or four, with the use of each written into the work instruction and visible at the point of use.

That cuts inventory, stops critical-area material being used to wipe a bench and, above all, keeps the choice from depending on who is on shift.
